Chapter 17

The End of a Long Day

“I can’t tell if I’m more tired or more hungry.” Wes pressed his fork into the flakey crust of his pot pie, and steam billowed out. He breathed in the aroma. “Okay, I’m more hungry.”

The sun had set, so Jake’s dad placed a lantern on the picnic table where the kids were having dinner. Their parents had already eaten and were gathered around the campfire.

Jake had grown quiet. In fact, he hadn’t spoken since their conversation with Agent Colter in the tent.

Amber noticed. “What’s up, Jake? Is something wrong?”

“I’m just tired.” He poked at his dinner.

“It sounds like you’re more than just tired.” She stared at him, waiting for an answer. “Are you still mad at us about the beacon?”

He sighed, and his shoulders slumped. “No, I’m not.” He paused and thought about it. “Well, yeah, I guess I kinda’ still am upset with you two. But that’s not what’s bugging me.”

“What’s bugging you then?” Amber asked.

“I just feel like…like… we’re losing.”

“Losing what?”

“The silver spearhead,” he mumbled. “It’s got to be the one from the journal. But now that stupid Jeff Claymont guy has it, and he’s going to give it to the director.”

“But Jake, we took the note.” She set her fork down and placed both her hands on the table. “So, the Twin Owls and the Director have no idea that Jeff has the spearhead and those other two bags.”

Wes raised a finger to talk, but he waited until he had finished chewing his food. “I kind of feel like we’re spies who intercepted a secret message.” His eyes gleamed in the glow of the lantern light. “But I’m getting confused. There are too many people.” He got up, went to the RV, and came back with something in his hand. Plopping a notepad and pencil onto the table, he began writing.

“What are you doing,” Jake asked.

“This.” He pushed the pad across the table to Jake and Amber. “Is that right?”
